Have you ever noticed how often we think about things outside of ourselves? We worry and wonder about what other people think about us. We think about other people and how they are doing.
But how often do you consciously inquire as to how you are feeling at any given moment? I was re-reading Eckhart Tolle's book, Practicing the Power of Now (his new book, A New Earth is also a must read - http://www.eckharttolle.com) and one section really struck me. Here's what he said:
"Make it a habit to monitor your mental and emotional state through self-observation. 'Am I at ease this moment?' is a good question to ask yourself frequently. Or you can ask, 'What's going on inside me at this moment?' Be at least as interested in what goes on inside you as what happens outside. If you get the inside right, the outside will fall into place."
Only having to get the inside right sure seems a lot easier, and more peaceful, than spending time trying to make everything on the outside right. So why not start tending to your interior and see what happens?

Have you been hiding? Want to come out and claim your brilliance? Imagine what could happen if you started owning your own unique brilliance and became even more of yourself. What kind of strength and power would emerge from you? Who would you be what could you do?
Don't worry, being confident and willing to shine doesn't mean you can't also be humble. Humility is about owning who you are and what you know AND also being quite open to learning new things from other brilliant people. Owning your brilliance doesn't make you arrogant.

Maybe it's because we forget or we're just too busy. Successful living happens when you realize your true power lies within. This quote captures the idea perfectly:

I picked up one of my Hugh Prather books the other day and was struck, as usual, by his simple yet profound words. I have many of his books and they are all delicious! The quote below comes from Notes of Love and Courage and doesn't need much of an explanation.
"In order to point my finger in praise or deprecation, in order to know some quality whether it is sweet or sour, in order to recognize it, that characteristic must in some way reside in me."

A scene from the movie, Walk the Line, about Johnny Cash's life really grabbed me. It was when he was just starting out and had his first audition with his band for Sam Phillips, a producer in Nashville. They played a well known song for the producer and he stopped them to ask if they had something else. Something that was 'believable' - something original. He asked what he would sing if he could only sing one song before he died, a song that would sum him up. Something real that he feels. Something that shows he believes in himself. So he played one of his original songs that was meaningful to him and yes, the producer liked it and recorded it.
If you have been living your life singing someone else's song, take some time and ask yourself what your life would feel like if you started singing "your own, original song."

Paying attention to what is happening in your own life is critical to creating a successful life. Think about, how much time do you spend contemplating what other people should be doing? Start paying attention to your thoughts and you may find that it is more often than you realized. The next time you catch yourself in someone else's business, just stop. Accept that they are quite capable of minding their business themselves and turn your attention to your own business. After all, how can you possible know what is best for someone else? Do you like it when other people presume to know what is best for you? Didn't think so.
Besides, we all have more than enough of our 'own business' to manage and our own business is the only business we can ultimately do anything about. A fabulous book I highly recommend regarding this, and many other subjects, is Loving What Is by Byron Katie. Her website is http://www.thework.com.

You live in a continuous cycle of doing and being. Sometimes when you feel stuck, a way to move forward is to switch modes. If you have been doing a lot, try just being. If you’ve been spending time just being, maybe it is time to get into action and do something. Being can lead to doing and doing can lead to being. Think about where you are right now and try the other mode.
